Letter to the Tico Times:
My wife, Donna, and I have visited Costa Rica during our winter vacation for almost a decade. It is not unusual for us to drive 1500 miles (yes miles) over a two-three week visit, so we have been all over Costa Rica through the years.

In our wanderings, we particularly savor those smaller out-of-the-way resorts/hotels, which offer high quality, outstanding accommodations as well as interesting natural or cultural features nearby. We have been in and around the Pacific Coast community of Dominical many times, staying at Roca Verde, Villa Rio Mar, etc. We have journeyed further south on the Coastanera, and have passed a hilltop hotel with a grand view about 35 kilometers south of Dominical in past years. This year we stopped and we were delighted we did!

The place is called the Lookout at Turtle Beach, and affable hosts Carol and Steve immediately make you at home. The Lookout obviously overlooks Playa Tortuga, and is in the Osa District of Costa Rica. The accommodations are superb, the view breathtaking, the birding phenomenal, the flowers exquisite, the hospitality perfect - I'm running out of superlatives here...

Close to the Pacific shore with all those ocean-related activities, the Lookout is also immediately off the Costanera, thus a good home base for those of us who make day-trip forays. The Lookout will provide transport for those desiring it. Adjacent to a modern mini-mall with a dive shop, hardware store, grocery store, dress shop, another restaurant (about half a kilometer away), you have most everything you would ever need at your fingertips. Away from the maddening crowds - definitely yes! Donna and I figure we have a good two years before everyone descends on the place... The Lookout is absolutely the treasure of the south-Pacific coast!!!
