At Playa Tortuga, I adore the Lookout at Turtle Beach (tel. 506/2786-5074,

Pinuela and inland of Playa Tortuga. New owners Carol and Steve Lipworth have
imbued this hilltop hotel with a bold and beautiful contemporary aesthetic with
harmonic and lively pastels. Paths weave through lush landscaped gardens to
bungalows with delightfully bright color schemes (such as fresh lime, or turquoise
and mint, with crisp white linens), cool tile floors, raised wooden ceilings with
fans, huge louvered glass windows, and terraces with hammocks. A mirador offers
fantastic views over both beach and jungle. Gourmet meals are prepared by a
professional chef.

The hotel has 12 brightly painted rooms featuring hot showers, ocean views, and
private balconies. A large deck in a tower above the pool is excellent for early
morning birding or slothful lounging. All local tours can be arranged. Rates vary,
